Come 'n listen to my story 'bout a man named Jedd

borrowed a truck and a buddy and loaded up, a' la Beverly Hillbillies, to move some of my locks, stocks, and barrels. the grandgirl thought it would be a good place to ride, on back there. i suggested a rocking chair and a shotgun. she didn't get it. the joke's not as good when you have to explain it. she was mildly disappointed when i pointed out there were no seatbelts up there.

When I first met you not that long ago you were in the midst of revamping your beautiful old lady of a house. I hope you won't be missing her too much but of course, I'm sure you won't be missing the evil oil company that funded the place.

It's funny how we get reminders of our age by no longer shared cultural references. She's very sweet foe all that.

su - planning a farewell party for the old dear once i have all the stray ends collected and woven into something that i can hold on to. yes, i'll miss her. she really is lovely. i hope she goes to a good home. ... on the hillbillies.... my goddaughter and her brother aren't much older than the grandgirl, and they've got a library of B'ly hillbillies movies.... it's so very retro, y'know..... my dear little lass is snoring softly in the corner bedroom as i send this off to you. back to school tomorrow, after spending spring break with granny.

I've gotten a few blank looks from some young folk ... even from some not so young folk ... when I've quoted an old jingle or two. One really feels dated when that happens!

haha, i think riding in the back of a pickup with a rocking chair and a shotgun is one of those uniquely american images. maybe she would have understood better if there was also a dog in the back.
