on the cusp of summer

on the cusp of summer the Burnaby sky is filled with colour

and with crows! hard to see in such a small image, but the sky and trees are full of them. i'm told that, decades ago, this was a marsh - crow territory, and, generations later, they have not relinquished it.

Crows never forget anything. Now they're just waiting for everyone to leave so they can incorporate our technology wisely.

Perhaps we can fly together with Master Crow :-)

i'll be very, very good, and hope for that. i stumbled on some pictures of crow and friends in my wanderings in vancouver, that i'll send to you.

look at those clouds! if they were any heavier, one could use them as blankets.
crows are amazing. when i lived in idaho, we had a crow that lived in our town. somebody had raised the crow but they had to give him up because it was against the law to keep a crow-- that's what i heard. the crow would walk into the grocery store and steal candy. he also liked to "buzz" people, and he'd occasionally bite someone (especially kids). every rural town in idaho has its eccentric characters; jim crow was ours.

lest you think i was kidding about jim crow, i was curious what would come up if i googled "jim crow + ketchum idaho."
somebody else remembers the crow too!!!
"By some accounts, the drug store for a period was a favorite haunt of a pet bird named Jim Crow, which often grabbed items such as keys and sunglasses from the countertop and carried them to an outdoor telephone line."

the crow lived there in the late 1970s. i was about 8 or 9 years old.

"Remember Jim Crow...the big crow that would attack kids during recess and steal matchbox cars? That was in the 70's before they relocated the crow to the Boise Zoo and renamed him Joe Crow."

ha! i found this quote on facebook.

one story i heard was jim crow used to ride the bus between hailey and ketchum. it wouldn't surprise me if this was true. he was a very smart bird.

i like to think all crows belong to the same flock, so of course susan's crow would know jim/joe crow.
only: flocks of crows are called murders.
which only makes me think of alfred hitchcock's film the birds.
